While it’s true that this cold cap was originally designed for migraines by a Canadian migraine warrior, when we found out that our customers were using it for chemotherapy, we knew we had to adapt.

While migraines can improve with just 10 to 30 minutes of blood-vessel constricting cold (with less intense cooling for up to 3 hours), chemo patients require prolonged intense cold.

Therefore, we decided to meet our customers where they were at and devise a system that actually works.*

Properly measuring your head is the first, most-important step you can take to ensure you get the snuggest, scalp-tight cooling as possible. So grab a tape measure and follow these simple instructions before you click purchase.

We’ve found that the absolutely maximum time it takes for a gel pack to reach maximum cold is 4 hours. While it certainly won’t always take that long, we overestimate to give you the greatest chance at success.

You will want a family member or friend to help you with this process, as you will need all your energy for chemotherapy. A support person can help you manage dry ice, freezers and switch caps. Some infusion centers even require this, so be sure to find out any regulations they have before beginning your cycle.

Unfortunately, for the best shot at cold capping success*, your gel packs need freezer temperatures of -30C or -22F, which most standard freezers cannot maintain.

Sourcing dry ice is easier than you may think. Simply Google ‘dry ice near me’ to see how readily available it is. Most grocery stores and general stores carry it, including Costco and WalMart.

1. Number each set of gel packs 1-8 with a permanent marker
   
   
2. Put gel-pack set 1 in one of your caps and gel-pack set 2 in the other. Freeze both caps and all gel pack sets for 1-2 days before the first session of each cycle
   
   
3. After 30 minutes, take off the cap you’re wearing and put on the other cap as quickly as possible.
   
   
4. Get your helper to remove gel-pack set 1 from the cap that you’re no longer wearing and return it to the freezer or cooler.
   
   
5. Get your helper to add gel-pack set 3 to the cap you’re not wearing and put it back in the freezer or cooler.
   
   
6. After the next 30 minutes, replace the cap you’re wearing with the one you’re not wearing as quickly as possible.
   
   
7. Repeat this process as many times as you need, each time replacing the cap you’re not wearing with the next number in line. When you get to gel-pack 8, start again from 1.

While both caps are indeed designed and manufactured the same, the Comfort Cap is meant for home use. 

All elements of the Continuous Cooling System (2 caps and 8 sets of gel packs) are meant to work together on a continuously rotating basis during chemotherapy sessions. 

While you can indeed use one of your chemo caps at home, our customers generally prefer keeping the system separate from the single cap.

You can freeze your entire cold cap with gel packs already in its pockets. In fact, that’s what we recommend. So you have 1 cap with gel packs in the freezer and 1 cap on your head at all times.

We recommend you also get:

• a permanent marker to keep your gel packs organized through their rotation 
• gloves to handle the dry ice (protective, insulated latex, nitrile, or leather gloves work)
