Cold capping doesn’t work for everyone — but it’s the best chance of keeping your hair during chemo.

The Mayo Clinic reports a success rate of around 66%1, with success defined as ‘maintaining at least half your hair.’ It’s the most scientifically-validated way to protect your hair during chemo.

Your mileage will vary — depending on the drugs used, the complexity of the treatment, and how long your chemo sessions last.

When you use them properly, cold caps give you a chance to try something… during a time when you have too little control over too many things.

And remember:

Your hair will grow back, no matter what. For 99.5% of chemo patients, your hair will grow back.

And in 6 months to 2 years, everything really can feel normal again.

But… if you’d like to try cold capping, Icekap can help.

How cold capping works — and what makes Icekap a simple, affordable option if you’d like to try cold capping.

Cold capping requires following a specific protocol: applying scalp-level cold to your head throughout every chemotherapy session.

Your hair grows from specialized cells called follicles — which, with their rapidly-dividing cells, become targets for chemotherapeutic agents. Cold is believed to slow down the cellular metabolism, reducing their exposure to this toxicity.

One of the best ways to get cold close to your follicles is with a specially-designed hat. This hat is lined with gel packs that can be frozen. The right cold cap gets a long-lasting cold as close to your scalp as possible.

The “right” cold cap should have these features:

✅ Snug and cozy, sized to fit your head
✅ Long-lasting gel packs, ideally medical-grade
✅ Soft gel packs that conform to your head shape
✅ Adjustable straps to get the cold tighter to your scalp
✅ The ability to maintain a very low temperature for a long time

This last point is crucial. You’ll want to cool your scalp down before your chemo session, and maintain that cold until at least half an hour after it ends.

Most cold capping systems use expensive, cumbersome methods to maintain that level of cold — heavy-duty pumps, powered coolers, and other features that may be effective, but add up to a hefty price tag. Many of them send you 8 caps or more, which you may pay thousands of dollars a month to rent.

The Icekap scalp cooling system is simpler, but still provides hours of cold when used properly. Our affordable caps have removable gel packs — so all you need are two caps and a cooler full of extra gel packs.

All you have to do is wear one cap while swapping fresh-from-the-freezer packs into your spare cap, ensuring you change to new packs every 30 minutes.*

Our cold capping systems empower everybody — not just people with disposable monthly income — to follow a cold capping protocol that has the highest chance of success.

We created our Cool Cap as a migraine-relief device: medical-grade gel packs, in a cozy fleece cap with adjustable straps so you can get as tight of a fit as you need.

Over the years, we noticed that a lot of people were buying Icekap Cool Caps to help with chemo. And when you compare it to the other options out there, it’s not hard to see why:

✅ Medical-grade gel packs that are soft when frozen, so they conform to your head
✅ A patented ponytail loop that helps you get hair out of the way and maximize scalp contact
✅ Adjustable tension straps that get the cold closer to your head
✅ A design that lets you swap out ice packs as they warm up
✅ A cozy fleece cap that provides comfort when you need it the most

And it costs a fraction of the price of other cold-capping systems.

How cold capping can help you try to minimize hair loss during chemotherapy.*

Cold capping has been used since the 1970s to counter the sometimes devastating impact of chemotherapy on your hair.

Hair loss happens during chemotherapy because chemo drugs target cancer cells based on their rapidly-dividing nature, hair-follicle cells get targeted too, risking damage and hair loss.

Extended cold to the scalp works in 2 ways:

Protects hair follicles

Scalp cooling constricts blood vessels which can reduce blood flow and allow fewer chemo drugs to reach hair follicles.

Slows metabolic rate

Prolonged cooling of hair follicles can slow cells’ rapidly-dividing nature removing them as targets for chemo drugs.

EXPLORE OUR CONTINUOUS COOLING SYSTEM

Cool your scalp before, during and after every chemo session.

For the best shot at reducing hair loss, chemo patients need sustained, maximum cold, kept close to the follicles — during their session, and for 30-60 minutes before and after the session as well.* For most people, this is 3 hours or less.

We help you make that happen with our 3-Hour Cooling Kit: three caps, with extra swappable ice packs that you can rotate through during chemo sessions.* For those with longer, specialized treatments, we also offer a 6-Hour Cooling Kit.

If you're just looking for comfort and relief for symptoms at home, we recommend the Cool Cap, which comes with one cap and one set of packs.

“This is an amazing product. After doing some research I bought 2 caps and one refill. The cap needs to be placed on 1/2 hour before chemo treatment begins remain 90 minutes after chemo treatment is completed. We found that one was good for an hour and a Half. So we bought a cooler with the refill packs, dry ice and one extra cap to her chemo treatment.”*

“I can’t afford the $1,200 unit for chemotherapy so I got this! My hair is thinning but not falling out like they said it would by now! They had warned me and a friend who went through this had said by their 2nd chemo their hair started to fall out. So far mine is just thinning a bit but no clumps have fallen out anywhere besides my arms and legs!”*

“I am using this to prevent/minimize hair loss from chemotherapy. Before I found this cap, I was making my own using cold packs and a bandana to hold them on my head.

This cap works the same way but much easier to use. And even though I'm doing a notoriously wicked chemo (nicknamed "the red devil"), I haven't lost much hair at all. I STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT ANYONE UNDERGOING CHEMO WHO IS CONCERNED ABOUT HAIR LOSS TRY THIS CAP.

IT CAN'T HURT.”
